Meet the AC
Mr John Alpin
Chair/Local Authority. H&S Governor.
As a Governor at St John’s for about 8 years it has been privilege to contribute to the education of the children, for whom I aim to provide the best possible environment and opportunity to learn. I have recently retired as a Principal Scientist in the Defence Aerospace Industry, having worked in my ‘dream job’ at MoD/QinetiQ Boscombe Down. Consequently, I am passionate and enthusiastic about science and engineering and wish to encourage our children to explore these subjects and develop into the scientists and engineers of the future. I really enjoy visiting school, either supporting the children’s reading or helping in scientific experiments – the latter can be messy at times but great fun! I also work as a Radio Presenter on Warminster Community Radio and as Secretary of the United Church, Warminster. I enjoy time with our 8 grandchildren, coastal walks and a bit of gardening.
Ms Karen Woollard
Co-opted Governor. SEN & Pupil Premium Governor.
I used to be a Teacher of Deaf Children and also a Special Needs Advisor in Somerset for 20 years and in Rwanda, in East Africa for 2 years. I am retired now and enjoy poetry, art, maths and science and being a Christian. I have a twin sister and a husband and we all like drawing and painting in UK and other countries. I think school is great and became a governor to help St John's in their work to enable children to find something they love learning during their school career.
Rev Sue Hart
I am assistant curate in the River Were Benefice of churches, which includes St. John’s Church. Before I entered ordained ministry I had a varied career as a musician; family, children’s and young people’s worker; writer and PR consultant.
I believe that children are inherently spiritual beings who, given the chance, have much to teach adults. I have been deeply impressed with the thoughtfulness of the children I have encountered at St. John’s School since becoming a governor in 2017. My hope is that St. John’s will continue to be a place where children feel safe and confident to explore and express their spirituality through curiosity, creativity and commitment.
Mrs Gill Maddocks
I have been a governor at St John’s for several years and a governor at various primary schools in the area for nearly 30 years assuming different roles. I believe every child deserves the best possible education and at St John’s it is a privilege to be part of a team who put the children at the heart of all we do. I enjoy learning from the children and staff, which helps to improve my skills and knowledge as a governor. Professionally I have been involved in care and education ranging from social work to working for Wiltshire as a member of the early years advisory team. I was responsible for quality assurance systems across provision for 0-5 year olds and now work for Bristol City Council on a part time basis. I am now enjoying spending more time with my 5 grandchildren, catching up with friends and the occasional keep fit session! If I can find time I enjoy being lost in a good book!
Ms Marion Barton
My working life has been varied but a commitment to people has been woven in all my roles. Beginning as a Police Officer, becoming a Youth Worker, partner in a business, managing services for Age Concern and then leading a mobility service in Salisbury gives you an idea of the diversity!
I have not been involved in education before but bring an open, enquiring mind willing to learn. I am passionate about reading and discovering the world through the written word.
